DOE has announced the availability of funding for its seven Office of Science program areas and the Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) . The program areas are: (1) basic energy sciences, (2) high energy physics, (3) nuclear physics, (4) advanced scientific computing, (5) fusion energy sciences, (6) biological and environmental research, and (7) energy research analyses. Department of Agriculture (USDA)

USDA invites applications for the FY 2005 National Research Initiative Competitive Grants program. This program supports research, extension, and education grants that address key problems of national, regional and multi-state importance in sustaining all components of agriculture. Approximately $150 million is expected to be available for awards of up to five years in duration. Of this amount, at least 80 percent will be available for research projects, with the remaining funds anticipated for integrated projects. This includes advanced technology programs for land mine detection such as integration and evaluation of infrared sensors, electro-optics, laser physics, hyperspectral analysis; target recognition; and radar, chemical, nuclear, acoustic sensor technologies and avionic systems on hand-held, airborne, ground and countermine system/sensors platforms. National Science Foundation (NSF)

University-Industry Postdoctoral Research Fellowships provide opportunities for recent doctoral recipients to broaden their knowledge, experience, and perspectives by exposing them to industrial environments and for industry to interact with talented researchers who are beginning their careers. Postdoctoral research fellows must be eligible to be appointed as a research associate or assistant professor at the institution submitting the proposal; have earned a Ph.D. in one of the mathematical sciences supported by the Division of Mathematical Sciences

Approximately $111,000 is expected to be available for an award having a 24-month duration; cost-sharing of $40,000 is required.

University-Industry Senior Research Fellowships provide partial sabbatical support for university faculty to conduct research in an industrial environment and for industrial mathematical scientists to contribute to the higher education enterprise. Senior research fellows must be a faculty member or hold a tenured position at the academic institution submitting the proposal; have earned a Ph.D. in one of the mathematical sciences supported by the Division of Mathematical Sciences http://www.nsf.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?gp; and make a commitment to return to the home institution for a minimum of one year following the fellowship tenure. Awards of up to to $60,000 for a 12-month duration may be made; cost-sharing is required.
Industry-Based Graduate Research Assistantships permit graduate students to move freely between university and industrial settings and to provide a conduit for strong university and industry interactions. NSF will provide 50 percent of the total support for each student for up to one year, or up to $20,000 per student per year.

NSF is soliciting proposals for research under the National Space Weather Program. This multi-agency federal research program seeks to mitigate the adverse effects of space weather to achieve timely, accurate and reliable space environment observations, specifications and forecasts. Approximately $1.5 million is expected to be available for 10-20 awards. These fellowships support future leaders in the mathematical sciences by enabling them to participate in research environments that will impact their future scientific development. Awardees may select either a research fellowship or research instructorship. Approximately $3.8 million is expected to be available for 30-35 awards. Applicants who are U.S. citizens, nationals or legally admitted permanent resident aliens may not have held the doctoral degree more than two years as of Jan. 1 of the year of the award. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE (DoD)

 

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has released a five-year,
open-ended solicitation for funding under the Non-Metallic Materials
Research Thrust program. The overall objective is to provide AFRL with a
procurement vehicle for executing unanticipated appropriations.
Approximately $161.1 million over fiscal years 2004-09 is expected to be

First Responder Counter- Terrorism Training Assistance
