Federal Funding Opportunities Department
of Agriculture (USDA) USDA invites
applications for the FY 2005 National Research Initiative Competitive
Grants program. This program supports research, extension, and education
grants that address key problems of national, regional and multi-state
importance in sustaining all components of agriculture. Approximately
$150 million is expected to be available for awards of up to five years
in duration. Of this amount, at least 80 percent will be available for
research projects, with the remaining funds anticipated for integrated
projects. Eligible for research projects are state agricultural experiment
stations, colleges and universities, other research institutions and organizations,
federal agencies, national laboratories, private organizations or corporations,
and individuals. Application deadlines vary by program. For more information,

Department of Defense
The Department of the
Army is soliciting white papers for applied research in land mine
and improvised explosive devices detection and eutralization technologies.
This includes advanced technology programs for land mine detection such
as integration and evaluation of infrared sensors, electro-optics, laser
physics, hyperspectral analysis; target recognition; and radar, chemical,
nuclear, acoustic sensor technologies and avionic systems on hand-held,
airborne, ground and countermine system/sensors platforms. One or more
contract awards having a project period of three years are anticipated.
Eligibility is unrestricted. White papers are due Jan. 10, April 10, July
10 and Oct. 10, annually. The solicitation will remain open until Sept.
30, 2007. More information is available at: https://abop.monmouth.army.mil/busopor27.nsf/all/W909MY4-R-0024
The Navy also is soliciting proposals for fire protection research and development in seven task areas: (1) fire extinguishing agents or delivery systems; (2) fire hazard analysis or passive fire safety; (3) small and large scale fire tests; (4) fire fighting training and tactics; (5) fire protection in submarines and other enclosed spaces; (6) simulated propellant-induced fires; and (7) total ship survivability tests and remote damage control. One award having a 12-month performance period, with four possible option years, is anticipated. Approximately $1 million is expected to be available for 10 awards distributed across the four fellowship opportunities detailed below. All awardees must be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the U.S. Proposals are due June 2, annually. For more information, visit: http://www.nsf.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?nsf05504
University-Industry Postdoctoral Research Fellowships provide opportunities for recent doctoral recipients to broaden their knowledge, experience, and perspectives by exposing them to industrial environments and for industry to interact with talented researchers who are beginning their careers. Postdoctoral research fellows must be eligible to be appointed as a research associate or assistant professor at the institution submitting the proposal; have earned a Ph.D. in one of the mathematical sciences supported by the Division of Mathematical Sciences http://www.nsf.gov/pubsys/ods/getpub.cfm?gp;
have held the Ph.D. for no more than seven years as of Jan. 1 of the year
of the award; have not held a tenured position at any academic institution
as of the date of the award; and have not previously held any NSF postdoctoral
fellowship. Approximately $111,000 is expected to be available for an
award having a 24-month duration; cost-sharing of $40,000 is required.
University-Industry
