Program Description

Goal
Help improve the security of the nation, while preserving our fundamental values, freedoms, institutions and economy.

Mission
The Office of National Security Research and Education Programs was established to promote, support and coordinate university-wide research, study, and technology development, leading to practical, affordable solutions to the current and future security challenges America faces at home and around the world.

Scope
At The Ohio State University, o
ur national-security focus is a broad one, including issues of (e.g.) national defense, intelligence, foreign relations, international development and homeland security.

Vision
The Ohio State University is recognized nationally and internationally as a “center of excellence” for innovative, leading-edge intra-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary research, study and technology development, addressing the full range of national security problems and issues facing America today and in the future.

Objectives

  • Promote and support national-security research, study and technology development within, between and among the university’s colleges, schools, departments, institutes, centers and laboratories;
  • Identify opportunities to assist those governmental agencies (at the federal, state and local levels), public-sector organizations, businesses and industries, and other organizations responsible for the security of America’s homeland and it’s strategic interests around the world;
  • Help align the university’s capabilities and resources with the requirements of people and organizations responsible for America’s national security;
  • Help transition the scientific research and technology developed at the university into practical, affordable solutions and capabilities, both independently and in collaboration with strategic partners, e.g., other universities, government agencies, and non-government organizations (in particular, the Battelle Memorial Institute).  These capabilities include more effective and affordable products and services, better-informed public policy, and people educated and trained to meet current and future challenges;
  • Promote the development of homeland security-related technologies that contribute to the economic growth of Ohio and its transformation to a more knowledge- and technology-based economy;
  • Assist in communicating the results of research accomplished by the university;
  • Help attract world-class researchers and scholars to come to the university to work in this area; and
  • Assist in acquiring the resources necessary to support the research, study and technology development necessary to realize the program’s vision.
