The Department of International Health and Development and the Payson Center for Technology Transfer and International Development have jointly developed a concentration in Complex Emergencies and Disaster Management. The two programs offer masters and doctoral degrees in Public Health and International Development respectively. The concentrations prepare professionals for management and leadership roles in international humanitarian and natural disaster settings, particularly in the context of fragile states and underdevelopment. The curriculum focuses on developing analytical and assessment/evaluation skills. An international faculty includes professional staff from the Centers for Disease Control, international non-governmental organizations, and disaster management executives from major international disaster management agencies. These include the United States Agency for International Development’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance, key United Nations Agencies, and major non-profit organizations. A summer institute offers specialized courses on-campus and overseas, including in Geneva, Rome, Sri Lanka, Kenya, and Costa Rica. Tulane University’s Homeland Security Studies Program, the Environmental Public Health Disaster Management degree Program and Complex Emergencies and Disaster Management Program represent a holistic approach to prepare, detect, respond, contain, and recover from natural disasters and terrorist events – from the undergraduate and post-baccalaureate- to the graduate and mid-career levels.
